Prepare for summer wildfires with these home safety tips

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Summer is fast approaching in the Inland Northwest, and Spokane Tribal Police has some tips for how to protect you and your family this fire season.

You can prepare now for this year’s wildfire season by creating defensible space around your home, cleaning gutters, putting together a go-bag with essentials and creating an evacuation plan.

Spokane Tribal Police says to create defensible space, you must clear out all vegetation within 30 feet from your home. Keep woodpiles and flammable materials at least 30 feet from your home as well.

If a fire breaks out in your area, it is a good idea to close up all windows, doors and fire-resistant blinds to prevent smoke and embers from getting inside. Leave outside lights on so your home is visible through thick smoke.
