SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash – It will be a race to finish up a project Thursday for a very special creature in Spokane Valley.
Mark Peterson and the 4 News Now Extreme Team are upgrading a home for a 30-year-old, 85-pound tortoise named Nelson.
Nelson is a big hit with kids of all ages who visit the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center.
The center is a popular field trip and learning location for kids throughout the area and Nelson is a fan favorite.
He’s outgrown his home, however, and that’s where the Extreme Team comes in.
Mark Peterson and his crew will upgrade an old aviary building on the site, putting in insulated panels and a farm-style door that will make it easier for Nelson to meet his guests.
They’ll include lights and a small heater to keep him warm, along with a window for ventilation in the summer.
