LONGVIEW, Wash. — At least one person is dead and nine others are still missing after an incident at a packaging plant in Longview on Tuesday morning. Nine people were injured.
According to the Longview Fire Department, a tank containing white liquor ruptured at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant. White liquor is a chemical mixture used in paper manufacturing.
Officials say the ruptured tank contained about 900,000 gallons of white liquor and around 90,000 of that may still be in the damaged tank.
The fire department says so far, ten people were sent to the hospital. Eight employees and one firefighter were injured, and there has been one confirmed death. Nine employees at the site are still unaccounted for.
Currently, LFD says the tank is still unstable, creating dangerous conditions for emergency personnel. First responders are still trying to reinforce and stabilize the site before recovery operations can move forward.
Officials say there is currently no direct threat to the community near the site.
The fire department says the site will be monitored overnight, but recovery efforts will not continue until Wednesday due to safety concerns.
