New therapy dog brings comfort to North Idaho elementary students

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — A new morning routine has taken shape at Bryan Elementary School, where students eagerly gather near the cafeteria to ask the same question: “Can I pet Boone?”

Boone, a 1.5-year-old golden retriever, has become the school’s newest facility dog, bringing comfort and support to students and staff since he began working around two months ago. The dog is part of the Coeur d’Alene School District’s facility dog program, which aims to help students feel calmer, safer and more supported.

Principal Kristin Gorringe is Boone’s handler and brings him to school on Tuesdays and Fridays. The golden retriever has stepped into a role left vacant after the school’s former facility dog, Llama, recently passed away.

“The kids really missed her,” Gorringe said.

The district launched its facility dog program in 2019. Dogs in the program must complete specialized training, pass a series of tests and maintain a set work schedule.

“Boone days are always our favorite days,” Gorringe said. “I don’t go a day without being asked when Boone is coming in. I always say Tuesdays and Fridays.”

Gorringe said the simple interaction between students and Boone can change the course of a day for those feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

“That oxytocin that comes out when you can just pet a dog, they are soft, and interact with each other,” she said. “It takes their mind for just for a second on whatever they are ruminating on.”

The interactions provide more than just a moment of calm. Gorringe said petting Boone “provides a mental break, and then it always leads to conversation. Where we can talk about dogs, or pets, or connect with one another.”

The principal said the dog’s presence has become a cornerstone of the school community.

“I am not sure who likes him better, the kids or the adults… or just me,” Gorringe said, smiling.

The principal noted that regardless of what incident might occur during the school day, Boone consistently helps redirect situations in a positive direction. While Boone serves only at Bryan Elementary, he is one of four facility dogs working throughout the Coeur d’Alene School District.
