Woman dead, 1 arrested for vehicular homicide after two-car versus pedestrian crash

SPOKANE, Wash. – A 70-year-old man was arrested for vehicular homicide after causing a crash that led two cars to hit a woman, killing her in northeast Spokane.

According to the Spokane Police Department (SPD), officers responded to a two-vehicle versus pedestrian crash on North Morton Street and East Empire Avenue just after 7 p.m. on Feb. 3. Preliminary information indicates a 35-year-old woman was crossing Empire Ave when she was struck by the first car.

SPD said the woman fell into the roadway when she was then hit by a second car. EMS performed life-saving measures, but despite their best efforts, the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

SPD Major Crimes and Drug Recognition Experts from both SPD and the Washington State Patrol responded to the scene. Through their investigation, they determined the driver of the first car was impaired.

Gary Thompson, 70, was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide. SPD said the driver of the second vehicle was not impaired.
