OLYMPIA, Wash. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized new standards for clothes washers and dryers which it claims will save Americans roughly $2.2 billion in utility costs annually.

The New DOE regulations will require washer and dryer manufacturers to cut-down on energy waste, which the department expects will reduce 71 million metric tons of carbon monoxide emissions.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm touted the standards as a win for consumers.

“With strong support from industry leaders and consumer advocates, DOE will continue to roll out innovative appliance solutions throughout 2024 to lower costs for the American people,” Granholm said.

Manufacturers will have until March 2028 to come into full compliance with the regulations, which are expected to reduce carbon emissions by roughly 70 million metric tons over the next 30 years.
