Tips for a tasty and affordable Super Bowl feast

SPOKANE, Wash. – Looking to host a Super Bowl party but don’t want to spend a fortune? Luckily, the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute’s 2024 Super Bowl Food Report has got your back.

Due to average U.S. wages increasing 4.5% since Jan. 2023, the report predicts that food spending this Super Bowl season is expected to be strong–and relatively affordable–compared to previous years.

This increase, while impressive, does not override the problem of food inflation, which has risen at least 1.3% in the last year. Average food consumption has also increased by 5.3% in the U.S.

Despite inflation, creating a memorable Super Bowl spread is still possible while avoiding high prices at the grocery store.

Here are some ideas according to the report:

Opt for homemade meals to save some coin!

“Food at Home” has increased less than “Food Away from Home,” 1.3% vs. 5.3%

Chicken wings and shrimp for the win!

The price of wings has decreased by 5% for fresh and 11% for frozen. Shrimp prices have decreased by 6.4%.

Ground beef sliders and meatballs!

Ground beef may be pricier than it used to be, but right now it is still an affordable $4.25 per lb. Sliders and meatballs would be great options!

Save money on alternative brands for chips and dips!

Snack costs have been on the rise. Avocado dip has increased by 1%; salsa by 3%; tortilla chips by 6%; and potato chips by 5%. Avoid overspending by choosing alternative brands instead of name brands!

Cheers for beers! (And 2-liter sodas)

For all beer-lovers, thankfully prices have only risen by 0.7%. For a non-alcoholic Super Bowl beverage, choose 2-liter bottles of soda and save! 2-liter soft drink prices have decreased 0.8% while 12 oz cans of soft drinks are up 4.8%.
