A lawsuit seeks to block Louisiana’s new congressional map that has 2nd mostly Black district

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana Legislature’s redrawn congressional map giving the state a second mostly Black congressional district is being challenged in a new federal lawsuit. The map was passed by the Republican-dominated Legislature under pressure from federal courts as a result of a 2022 lawsuit filed in Baton Rouge. The new, separate lawsuit was filed in Lafayette by 12 “non-African American” voters. It says the map is the result of “racial gerrymandering” and seeks a court order preventing it from being used in this year’s elections. It’s not clear yet how the new lawsuit will affect the 2022 litigation, which is still ongoing.
