Black History Month is here! Celebrate with these 7 upcoming Spokane events!

SPOKANE, Wash. – Celebrate and honor Black History Month by participating in a variety of fun and educational events in the Spokane area.

Black History Month at Foley Library from Feb. 1-29

Explore and learn about Black History through a display of stories, experiences, and books written by Black authors and individuals illuminating the diversity of Black experiences in America. The display will run throughout the month of Feb. at Gonzaga University’s Foley Library at 502 E Boone Ave. Foley is open to the public most weeks Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Third Annual Spokane Black Voices Symposium – The Black Lens at Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center on Feb. 1

Enjoy a student-led presentation of art and other works from Spokane’s black community celebrating the theme, “Black Joy – An Aspirational Mindset.” The event is presented by African Northwest Passages book club and will take place at 7 p.m. at Gonzaga University’s Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center. Tickets are free but must be reserved online prior to the event.

The Lived Experience: a Poetry Workshop at Spark Central in Spokane on Feb. 6

Join local poet and author Stephen Pitters as he shares his meaningful story of living on an all-white campus in 1960s Louisiana and how his experience impacted his work. Afterward, participate in a poetry writing workshop led by Pitters and turn your own lived experiences into poetic works of art. This is a free event and it will run from 5-7 p.m. at Spark Central in Spokane.

The Sound of (Black) Music at Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center on Feb. 6

Celebrate Black art and culture by watching a unique reimagination of the beloved musical through an Afrofuturist lens including musical genres such as jazz, gospel, blues, soul, funk and Afro-beat. “The Sound of (Black) Music” will be performed on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Gonzaga University’s Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center. Reserved seat tickets are $30-$48 for the general public and $15 for Gonzaga University students.

2nd Annual Black History Month Resource and Empowerment Fair at the Central Spokane Public Library on Feb. 17

Peruse the Black Owned Business & Resource Fair at the Central Spokane Public Library from 2-3 p.m. Stay for the Night of Empowerment program from 3-5 p.m. featuring Spokane community guest speakers Luc Jasmin III, Jerrall Haynes, David Moss, Oscar Harris, and Rev. James Watkins. This event is free of charge!

Black History Comedy Showcase at the Goody Bar on Feb. 17

Delight in a night of comedy celebrating black culture featuring comedians Ibrahim, Anthony Singleton, Charles Hall Jr. and Darryl Burns. The event is set to run from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Goody Bar in Spokane Valley. Tickets are $10 for presale and $15 at the door.

Duke Ellington: From Swing to Sacred at Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center on Feb. 24

Celebrate the music of famous American jazz icon Duke Ellington featuring performances from Gonzaga University’s student and faculty musicians, the Spokane Symphony Chorale and professional classical and jazz musicians from the Spokane community. The performance begins at 7:30 pm at the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for Gonzaga University students and $15 for general admission.
