SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Prep held its annual Thanksgiving food drive, where students collected and delivered more than 132,800 pounds of food to local families, food pantries and charities.

The food will go to over 2,000 people in the Spokane community, with this year’s total exceeding the school record by 5,500 pounds.

“We know that a food drive won’t strip many of these people from the burdens of poverty or pull them out of tough times,” said the school’s Director of the Office of Service and Justice, Liz Slamkowski, “but it does offer hope, relief, and a momentary reminder that they have not been forgotten.”

The school’s food drive total will be entered in the Great Ignatian Challenge, a nationwide Thanksgiving food drive between primarily Jesuit and Catholic Schools.

Gonzaga Prep’s Food Drive is a tradition that has lasted over 60 years and is one of the largest and most enduring initiatives in the Inland Northwest, according to the school.

“The commitment of Gonzaga Prep students to collect food for those in the community facing hardship remains a key experience grounded in the school’s mission to inspire leaders who create a more just and loving world,” said Gonzaga Prep’s Communications Specialist, Gina Pinnock.
