City of Spokane anticipates completion of Post Street bridge project by spring

SPOKANE, Wash. – The 50th anniversary of Expo 74′ here in Spokane is now less than two months away. That’s why the city of Spokane is eager to complete the long-awaited Post Street bridge project.

Construction started back in June of 2020, and the initial expectation was to have the bridge finished by December of 2022. That didn’t happen, and COVID-19 didn’t help that deadline either.

Right now, the city’s goal is to have it done by the end of Spring, so right around time for Expo 74′ 50th celebration event. Just don’t expect it to be ready for the start of the party.

According to Kirstin Davis with the City of Spokane, the new bridge will have one northbound lane of traffic as well as a pedestrian & bike lane on either side of it.

For aesthetics, it will have planters and iconic Spokane arches, and they are tucking away the sewage pipe that runs underneath.

What still needs to be done in order for it to be open to the public?

They say they are in the final stages and have curbing and the railing left to put in.

The approaches on either side require asphalt. The problem is that asphalt plants aren’t open yet.

Of course, they have to put on the final touches like planters and striping but that requires certain weather that Spokane is not experiencing right now.

Davis says once it’s done, the bridge will be well-worth the wait.

“A fabulous connecting point between that north bank where there has been so much development,” said Davis. “With the sports complexes, new restaurants, and new businesses, there’s just a lot happening, and this is a great connecting point for that.”

Davis says this bridge will allow even more movement and options for how people travel the downtown area.
