Spokane Public School board bans Border Patrol in schools

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane School board met on Wednesday to discuss the policy on the access of Border Patrol in schools.

As reported by the Spokesman Review the discussion came about because of the added stress and anxiety border agents can give children at school.

The conversation was sparked when administration spoke with Latinos En Spokane, which is an activist group in Spokane supporting the local Latino population.

The policy is merely a revision of the previous version and President of the school board Nikki Otero Lockwood says, “It’s to clarify and make it just very clear that Border Patrol should not be in our schools.”

Although some other parties in the conversation don’t agree with the revision. Former Washington U.S. Attorney Jim McDevitt calling the ban “obnoxious.”

He argued that presentations and presence of law enforcement in schools can be educational and can even deter crime.

The board made its final revisions after the Wednesday meeting and reviewed the 780-signature petition to ban border agents from schools.

The board also made it known that parents of students who work for Border Patrol may still be engaged with their children’s education outside of work.
