SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane will introduce a proposal Monday to approve $1.2 million in Tax Increment Financing funding for Habitat for Humanity to rehabilitate seven affordable housing units in West Central.
TIF districts direct extra property tax revenue from new developments like Kendall Yards toward public projects in surrounding neighborhoods.
“We’ve seen firsthand how this partnership can transform lives and stabilize blocks in West Central,” said Habitat for Humanity CEO Michelle Girardot.
Mayor Lisa Brown called the funding “a creative and forward-thinking tool that allows us to reinvest in our neighborhoods.”
Council Member Kitty Klitzke said the demand for affordable housing in Spokane is urgent, calling the project “a significant step toward addressing the affordable housing crisis.”
TIF funding traditionally finances public infrastructure. In 2020, Washington state expanded allowable uses to include permanently affordable housing.
The Neighborhood Project Advisory Committee unanimously supported the investment.
