Spokane Pride showcases queer history with permanent library exhibit

SPOKANE — Spokane Pride has secured its first permanent exhibition space to showcase queer history throughout Pride Month at the Central Spokane Public Library.

This marks the third year the non-profit has created a display to educate the community about local queer history, but the first time it has been granted a dedicated space for the entire month of June. The third-floor houses hundreds of curated items showcasing the queer community’s impact in Spokane.

“For me when I can see myself in other people from history and from now, it helps restore my belief in myself and helps me move on and be engaged with the world around me,” said Crystal Marche, exhibit curator.

Officials say the exhibit dispels stereotypes and demonstrates that queer history continues to evolve daily.

“I feel like people thought we were at the end of history like ten years ago. Not true, there is a lot more fight happening. The more we know about our past the better we can move forward together into the future,” said Matthew Danielson, Spokane Pride executive director.

The organization maintains an active community schedule year-round.

“We tend to do at least 3 events every month that often raise money for different programs within Pride or even totally different organizations,” Danielson said.

“This is just something that helps me create a space where we can see ourselves and it makes me feel immensely proud of who I am and the people that have come before me,” Marche said.

Spokane Pride will host its largest annual event, the Spokane Pride Parade and Festival, next weekend at Riverfront Park.
