SPOKANE, Wash. — Gas prices in Spokane County hit an all-time high, according to AAA. Drivers are looking for ways to save money at the pump.
Washington state now has the highest recorded average gas price on record. Spokane, Washington state and Coeur d’Alene prices are all more than $1 higher than they were last year.
The high prices are hurting drivers who are already struggling financially.
“I lost my job. So gas prices and everything have been hard,” said John Lindsey, who was looking for cheaper gas. “Especially now when you’re down to a quarter tank or less, when you need to get fueled up and you have gas prices that are five-something per gallon now, it’s hard on somebody’s budget when you don’t have that.”
Drivers have several options to save money on gas. They can use apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas stations in the area.
Some drivers use rewards programs. Nom Nom’s offers 15 cents off per gallon for members. But these programs don’t work for everyone.
“I’ve tried it, but sometimes it doesn’t work in the long run,” Lindsey said. “Unless you’re really a traveler where you travel a lot and you use it a lot. It probably works great for some of those people, but for myself, I don’t think it works great.”
Costco membership often provides cheaper gas than other local stations.
Some drivers travel to Idaho for cheaper gas. Idaho gas is 77 cents cheaper than Washington. But the round trip costs money too.
“I used to go to Idaho to get cheaper [gas],” said Xander Alfredsson. “But even in Idaho it’s the same as it was a month ago here in Washington so in Idaho, it’s just the same thing.”
Drivers hope prices will go down. They want more clarity from the federal government about when that will happen.
