Spokane City Council eases food truck regulations with new ordinance

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane City Council has approved an ordinance that will make operating food trucks in the city easier.

The ordinance passed with a 5-1 vote on Monday, with Councilmember Cathcart opposing and councilmember Zappone absent from the meeting.

This ordinance will decrease some regulations for food trucks, including getting rid of a requirement for a separate food truck-specific license and allowing food trucks to operate with a general business license instead.

“Addressing the overly burdensome regulations for mobile food vendors is a win-win for breathing new life into our city and for enjoying culinary diversity,” said Council Member Paul Dillon. “Breaking down barriers for small business owners, such as food trucks, will help fuel Spokane’s vibrancy and activation. I want to thank Council Member Dixit and Mayor Brown’s administration for all their work advancing this policy.”

The Spokane Regional Health District will still be in charge of inspecting food trucks. Business owners hope this new ordinance will streamline the process of getting the right permits.

“Passing these updates to mobile food vending in our city, specifically in our downtown core, is in alignment with our overall goal of activating public spaces,” said Council Member Sarah Dixit. “We can, and should, support our local businesses and entrepreneurs to pursue their passions, while promoting public health, business growth, cultural vibrancy, and economic vitality for all.”

The ordinance will go into effect 30 days after Mayor Lisa Brown’s signature, which is expected within several days.
