OLYMPIA, Wash. — Rep. Marcus Riccelli is running for Washington State Senate.

Just hours after Washington Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig, D-Spokane, said he wouldn’t seek re-election in November, Riccelli, D-Spokane, announced his bid for the state Senate seat in Washington’s 3rd Legislative District.

Riccelli was first elected to the House in 2012.

While most of eastern Washington is represented by Republicans, the state’s 3rd Legislative District, nestled mostly in the city of Spokane, is a spot of blue in the sea of red.

“This is going to be a historically important election year– with races at every level impacting the future of our nation, state, and communities,” Riccelli said in his announcement. “I also believe we need Democratic representation from Spokane and Eastern Washington to bring critical perspectives to policy making.”

In his announcement, Riccelli also touted some of his accomplishments in the House, touching on everything from his role as chair on the House Health Care Committee to his efforts to increase state investments in Spokane.

“I… was pleased to lead and have helped negotiate a transportation package that delivered on significant investments including the North Spokane Corridor, Central City Line, Division Bus Rapid Transit and the U-District pedestrian bridge,” Riccelli said.
