SPOKANE, WA. – Mixed media artist, Tracy Poindexter-Canton is hosting a community celebration with The Carl Maxey Center in honor of their new permanent Little Library in East Central.

Circling around the theme of imagination, the Poindexter-Canton’s Little Library is an inspirational piece of art that will soon be open for the public to enjoy. This library took more than 100 hours to design and incorporates about 30 different mixed-media materials.

Poindexter-Canton made sure to also include books written by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) authors. She invites the public to be an element of her creation by donating a book written by a BIPOC author.

“As a child, my maternal grandmother played a huge role in developing my creativity, inadvertently igniting a future passion for mixed media art,” said Poindexter-Canton. “Perceptive of my vivid imagination, Granda Alma kept a cardboard box for me under the chair in her hallway broom closet filled with old gift ribbons, mismatched buttons, knickknacks, and other commonly discarded scraps, which I used to create all sorts of arts and craftsy things. I hope individuals of all ages who visit this library will be inspired by its fun, free-spirited vibes intended to awaken one’s imagination.”

The unveiling of the Tracy Poindexter-Canton’s Little Library at The Carl Maxey Center will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend and will have an opportunity to learn more about the creative process behind the Little Library with a brief story, music, food, and conversation.
