Medical examiner identifies man who died by suicide during SWAT standoff in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — The man who allegedly attempted to set his house on fire during a SWAT standoff in Spokane on Sunday was identified.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner confirmed Tony Haynes, 71, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On March 3, around 1 p.m., officers with the Spokane Police Department (SPD) responded to a domestic violence call near the 3200 block of West Boone Avenue. Shortly after, the caller said the suspect attempted to light the house on fire.

The fire was put out, and the caller was removed from the home. After an hours-long SWAT standoff, law enforcement located Haynes’ body.

This incident remains under investigation.
