MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — One person is dead and one is in critical condition after what authorities are calling a murder-attempted suicide in Medical Lake last night.

On Nov. 26 around 4:40 p.m., Spokane County deputies received reports of a girl in the middle of the road in the 1000 on north Prentis Street in Medical Lake.

The caller told dispatchers that the girl looked severely injured, but did not know how she got hurt.

Deputies and Spokane County fire arrived on scene and provided medical aid to the girl. She was transported to the hospital, but unfortunately died from her life-threatening injuries.

After gathering information from witnesses and family members, law enforcement found that the woman was seen outside her residence with her brother. Gunshots or a vehicle backfire was heard in the neighborhood just before the man left.

He was seen leaving in a Mustang just before the woman’s body was discovered in the road.

Around 5 p.m. that same day, a Mustang was reported to be parked on the 7200 block of north Graham Road in Medical Lake. The caller said the driver’s side window appeared to be shattered and someone was possibly inside.

As medical personnel and deputies arrived on scene they found the suspect in the drivers seat. He was “slumped over with what appeared to be a pistol in his hand.”

The man received treatment for his life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital where he is still in critical condition.

The girl has been identified as Lily Stolworthy, a sixth grader at Medical Lake School. The superintendent at the school district released a statement to families stating:

“With the family’s permission, it is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our sixth-grade students, Lily Stolworthy. Lily was involved in a domestic violence incident, and unfortunately, she did not survive.”

“We understand this news may be difficult to process. As a system, we are coordinating crisis support for students and staff members who are impacted at each of our schools. The District’s Wellness Center team, school counselors, and external agencies are working together to provide crisis counseling services as needed. We have also included resources that you can use to have conversations with your child regarding grief and loss.”

The Medical Lake School District will be providing support for students, family members and faculty through this time.
