Restrictions on mountain passes in Washington and Idaho as snow hits the region

WASHINGTON – Winter weather is here, and mountain passes throughout the region are seeing compact snow and ice on the roadways, forcing restrictions to be implemented.

Before you travel, here’s a look at mountain pass conditions in Washington and Idaho as of Dec. 1.

Washington Passes

Blewett Pass: Blewett Pass is experiencing light snow with slush and ice on the roadway. Traction tires are advised, and snow tires are prohibited. To learn more, visit the WSDOT website.

Snoqualmie Pass: Drivers on Snoqualmie Pass are advised to use traction tires as there is compact snow and ice on the roadway. Snow continues to fall, and you should expect delays. If you would like to receive updates on weather conditions on Snoqualmie pass, WSDOT said to text ‘start’ to 85107. For more information, visit the WSDOT website.

Stevens Pass: Traction tires are required on Stevens Pass as the road has compact snow and ice. Vehicles over 10.000 gross vehicle weight are necessary to use chains. At this time, light snow is falling in that area. Visit the WSDOT website for information on Stevens Pass.

White Pass: Traction tires are required on White Pass, and vehicles over 10.000 gross vehicle weight are required to use chains. Compact snow and ice are on the roadway. Oversized vehicles are prohibited eastbound from milepost 138, 13 miles west of the summit and westbound from milepost 160, nine miles east of the summit.

Idaho/Montana Passes

Lookout Pass: Lookout Pass is experiencing snow and ice on the roadways. Traction tires are advised. For more information, visit the Montana Department of Transportation (DOT) website.

LoLo Pass: Traction tires are advised as scattered snow and ice covers the roadway. Light snow is expected to continue in the area. For more information, visit the Montana DOT website.
