Oregon Road Fire burns 8,282 acres near Elk, forces multiple level 3 evacuations

ELK, Wash. – The Oregon Road fire continues to burn 8,282 acres at 0% containment, destroying multiple structures.

The fire is burning uphill near Spring Valley Road and East Jefferson Road at the Spokane/Pend Oreille County border. In an updated Facebook post, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) says, “numerous structures have been destroyed.”

According to SCSO, due to the heavy smoke and air quality, air units could not assist in fighting this fire for most of the day on Sunday. About 200 fire personnel are battling the blaze.

Extensive level 3 (Go Now!) evacuations remain in the following areas:

Level 1 (Get Ready!) evacuations are in place for Elmers Loop and County Homes Roads.

The Red Cross has an evacuation center for anyone displaced by this fire. Riverside High School is open at 4120 E Deer Park Milan Road, Chattaroy, WA 99003. Large animals can be taken to the Newport Rodeo Grounds.

On Sunday, a proclamation signed by Governor Jay Inslee put Washington in an official State of Emergency. The declaration opens up the potential for additional state and federal resources to respond to this fire, along with the Gray Fire burning in Medical Lake.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
