OLYMPIA, Wash. – An event held in Olympia by the Washington State Women’s Commission (WSWC) on March 1 highlighted the gender pay equity gap.

Organizers, including the Center for Women and Democracy and the KD Hall Foundation, highlighted that addressing disparities in pay between men and women requires both government and business leadership.

Several Washington State Supreme Court justices attended the event and spoke with attendees about their work.

Programming included representatives from the Washington State Treasurer’s Office, WMarketplace, the University of Washington Center for Women’s Welfare and Washington State Labor Council president April Sims.

Governor Jay Inslee declared March as Women Making History Month for the first time this year and supported Women at the Capitol on social media.

Gender equity issues are also being addressed by local governments. On Tuesday, the City of Spokane highlighted that women only represent 39 percent of municipal commission and board members.

Additional events in observation of Women’s History Month will occur throughout the Evergreen State on March 8, which is International Women’s Day.
