More than 1,000 participants attend the annual Spokane River Run

SPOKANE — More than 1,000 runners gathered at Riverside State Park Sunday morning for the annual Spokane River Run.

The event featured four races for locals to choose from, ranging from 5K to 50K. Runners enjoyed the sunny weather as they tackled courses through the park.

“I’m ready for a beer. It was a super fun course. Beautiful day. Couldn’t have asked for better weather,” said Nick Clissorr, who finished the 25K course.

Andrew Griffin, who was the first finisher of the 25k challenge also described the course.

“The heart rate’s still coming back down, but the endorphins are high, you know, trying to keep your feet under you when you’re going down super steep hills.”

The River Run started 24 years ago when Garfield Elementary School parents wanted to raise funds for the APPLE program. Since then, participation has grown significantly.

This year, most of the race’s profits will support four local student programs and organizations.

“Incredible. Yeah. I think it’s one of the best way you can get kids early on is a passion for the outdoors,” Clissorr said.

Race organizer Char Parker said the event brings people together.

“This event is just people who love to be with people and who want to share an experience on a trail,” Parker said.

Shawn Gubgel has participated in the River Run for 15 years. She explained why she returns each year.

“It’s such a good vibe…everyone’s happy…healthy…and everyone’s enjoying it,” Gubgel said.

Next year’s 25th anniversary race aims to attract 1,200 runners.
