Green Bluff strawberry farms open early for u-pick season

MEAD, Wash. — Strawberry season has arrived earlier than expected in the Inland Northwest, with two u-pick farms at Green Bluff opening their fields to the public this weekend.

Walters Fruit Ranch will host its annual Strawberry Kick Off Event this Saturday, inviting berry enthusiasts to pick their own fresh strawberries directly from the fields. The farm will be open for u-pick operations from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until the berries are gone.

Several varieties of strawberries are available for picking on the bluff this year. Farmers at Walters say pickers will have access to June-bearing strawberries this weekend, which are specifically known for their sweet and juicy characteristics.

“They are not going to make it to the grocery store. They are very delicate and soft. You are getting at the peak of freshness too where mother nature has put all of the sugars into them,” said Jason Morrell, owner of Walters Fruit Ranch.

The strawberry fields are located just a few blocks away from the ranch’s main location at 17706 N Sands road. The farm plans to open for additional u-pick sessions once more berries ripen.

Visitors planning to attend the Saturday event should arrive early, as the farm operates on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies are exhausted for the day.
