SPOKANE, Wash.– A series of solar storms is expected to reach Earth on Thursday, giving much of the country a chance to spot the Aurora Borealis.
Commonly called the Northern Lights, the Aurora forms when charged solar particles ejected from the sun interact with our upper atmosphere. A Geomagnetic Storm Watch is in effect for a level 3 out of 5 storm.
If that upper end of the forecast proves true, even southern states could see the Northern Lights low on the horizon.
The weather is likely to cooperate with sky watchers overnight, with partly cloudy skies at worst and mostly clear skies at best.
An easy way to see if the Aurora is out is to hold up your phone to the sky on night mode/high exposure. The camera will often pick up what your eyes cannot.
