OLYMPIA, Wash.- Aaron Wheeler, an information technology expert who has worked for the Suquamish tribal government for 18 years, has been tapped to lead the Washington State Broadband Office (WSBO).

Wheeler, who was appointed as the new director by Governor Jay Inslee on Feb. 13, will focus on rural broadband access.

According to the Washington State Department of Commerce, which oversees the broadband office, Wheeler has been tasked with creating a plan to address internet access gaps across the Evergreen State.

“He’ll lead the WSBO as it works with other state agencies and private partners to develop and implement a five-year action plan and digital equity plan to create universal, reliable high-speed internet across Washington,” the department said.

Indigenous communities have some of the worst internet access gaps nationally. The Spokane Tribe of Indians has struggled with both broadband access and making internet coverage affordable for tribe members.

Inslee highlighted Wheeler’s experience working with indigenous and rural communities while announcing his appointment.

“Rural internet access is a priority in Washington, and Aaron’s experience will help everyone get connected no matter where they are,” Inslee said.

Wheeler will assume the role March 1.
