How local and state agency snow crews are preparing for hazardous conditions

SPOKANE- The City of Spokane, Spokane County and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) spent Thursday treating roads with de-icer.

WSDOT had crews treating state roads with de-icing materials, such as salt or liquid de-icer. Crews plan to provide 24-hour coverage from Thursday to the weekend.

“There will always be maintenance crews in all of our areas within our region ready to head out and clear and treat the roadways for the traveling public,” Joe McHale, a WSDOT spokesman, said.

The City of Spokane had crews out Thursday preparing roads for snow that is anticipated for Friday. They treated City streets with de-icer and sand.

“Hills and arterials are always a challenge depending on all sorts of conditions. Whether it’s how much snow has fallen, temperatures, moisture…all sorts of things. And the type of traffic that’s going through there,” Kirstin Davis, a communications manager for The City of Spokane, said.

Spokane County communications managers told NonStop Local that they plan to have crews with plows and sand handling the roads.

The County anticipates icy spots, however, because conditions are changeable, their strategy will almost be district specific.
