Grant County Sheriff’s Office plans to add two K9s to the team in 2024

GRANT COUNTY, Wash. – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) is projected to add two new K9s to their team in 2024.

The sheriff’s office confirmed in a Facebook Post that the K9 program is supported by this year’s budget, allowing them to set aside K9 funds. Starting Jan. 1, GCSO will purchase the K9s and pair them with their handlers. The goal is to have both K9s by Oct. 2024.

GCSO said their partners at the Moses Lake Police Department offered one of their K9 handlers to train the two new members of the sheriff’s office and their handlers.

The total cost of the two K9s is around $36,000.

“In the past, the K9 program was supported solely by donations. After providing – for the past nine years – better public protection through the use of K9s, we learned two things: the K9 program was a success, and operating a successful program in a donations-only fashion was not sustainable,” GCSO said.

GCSO plans to use this new budget in 2025 to bring another K9 to the team. This would bring them back to four K9s after three retired this year.

“We are grateful for this opportunity that will help us continue to deliver the top-shelf service that our customers have come to expect, and we are grateful for our partners and community that support us,” GCSO said.
