Franklin Park murder suspect sentenced to 11 years in prison

SPOKANE, Wash. – The man who was arrested for the murder of 27-year-old Darnell Bluff near Franklin Park last July was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty on Wednesday.

Jose M. Matthews, 43, was arrested for the murder booked into the Spokane County Jail on a second degree murder charge on July 31, 2023, according to a release from the Spokane Police Department (SPD).

In addition to his 11-year sentence, Matthews was also sentenced to 36 months of community custody.

Bluff was found shot by SPD officers in the 5200 block of North Division late at night on July 14, 2023. Life saving measures were performed on Bluff by medics but despite their efforts, he did not survive.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner identified Bluff as the victim of the murder eleven days later.

Bluff’s cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head. His manner of death was listed as homicide.
