City of Spokane considering street racing ordinance

SPOKANE, Wash – The City of Spokane is considering an ordinance regulating aggressive street racing and speeding.

The ordinance, proposed by council members Paul Dillon and Michael Cathcart, was on the agenda Monday for the city’s Public Safety and Community Health Committee.

According to the ordinance, “street racing and aggressive speeding have become more prevalent in the City of Spokane, and Spokane is experiencing more fatalities and injuries from speed-related vehicle crashes than from homicides.”

Under the ordinance, anyone found guilty of violating the rules would have to pay $500 for the first offense and $800 for a second offense. A driver cited a third time would have to pay $1,500.

The full city council could review the ordinance in early June.
