Several road work projects kick off in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane drivers can expect delays in a few areas of town, as several road work projects kicked off today.

According to a news release from the city, the affected areas include the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Washington Street, Market Street and Columbia Avenue near the Hillyard Aquatic Center and Nevada Street and Cozza Drive.

The work downtown is focused on resurfacing 3rd Avenue. Drivers can expect lanes reductions and congestion eastbound on 3rd Avenue between Lincoln Street and McClellan Street and southbound on Washington Street between 5th Avenue and 2nd Avenue. Crews will also replace aging pipes and ADA curb ramps.

Across town, other projects are focused on pedestrian safety. The city will install updated pedestrian signals at the intersection of Market Street and Columbia Avenue and at Nevada Street and Cozza Drive. Drivers will see lane reductions and slowdowns in both areas.

The pedestrian safety changes are part of a $1.5 million project meant to improve accessibility and walkability.

The city is asking drivers to consider alternative routes, allow extra time for travel and drive carefully through construction zones. Access to businesses will be available.

The work downtown is expected to finish in early July, and the pedestrian safety improvements will wrap up later that month.
