California governor pushes back against criticism of fast food minimum wage law

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing back against criticism about a new law he signed last year. The law requires most fast-food restaurants to pay workers a minimum wage of $20 per hour. The law exempts restaurants that have on-site bakeries that sell bread as a stand-alone menu item. That appeared to apply to Panera Bread. Newsom campaign donor Greg Flynn owns a company that operates Panera Bread franchises in California. A Newsom spokesperson on Thursday said Newsom never met with Flynn about the law. Newsom’s office said they believe the law still applies to Panera Bread restaurants.
