Bill enhancing state campaign finance laws passes Washington Senate

OLYMPIA, Wash.- A policy which would require additional campaign finance information to be shared with the public passed the Washington State Senate on Feb. 12.

SB 5284 would require candidates in Washington to file a contribution and expenditure report to the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC), in addition to mandating that companies file information proving that their political donations are not influenced by foreign governments.

The policy, which is sponsored by Senator Joe Nguyen (D), was originally introduced to the state legislature in 2023, and remained stationary after the House and Senate could not reach agreement on amendments to the bill.

If passed, the bill would make the finances of state political campaigns more available to Washington voters.
