Even with warm temperatures, snow still sits on the mountain at 49 Degrees North!

CHEWELAH, Wash. — With temperatures warmer than normal, many avid skiers and snowboarders may be wondering how the slopes are looking.

At 49 Degrees North, there is still plenty of snow to work with.

The lack of snow over the past few days means the drive up to the mountain is less slippery but once you get up the lifts and onto the hill there is still enough snow to have a good day of skiing.

This lack of snow is a direct contrast to the conditions they saw earlier in January. Rick Brown with 49 Degrees North says that they were at their peak a few weeks ago.

They saw as much as 15 inches of snow within a 24-hour period. But, while some of that snow has dissipated, Brown says most of it is still here.

“As the temps rise above freezing and it needs to get above freezing for the snow to dissipate. We do start to lose some,” said Brown. “With it being consolidated with skiers and cats it does last a lot longer than snow that just sits in its natural state.”

Brown is expecting some more snow to fall over the next month or so, but if it doesn’t, they can always make their own snow. Right now they have already turned about 7 million gallons of water to snow this season.
