SPOKANE, Wash. – A woman is in jail after she assaulted a Spokane County sheriff’s Deputy and damaged a patrol car during an arrest early Monday morning.

Kathleen M. Rice, 34, was reported passed out outside the Denny’s on Sprague and Pines around 6:55 a.m. on Dec. 11. The caller told law enforcement she appeared high and was now wandering across the street toward Value Village.

A Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy quickly found Rice, but she started running away before they could arrest her. The Deputy positioned his patrol car in front of Rice as she tried to run in front of it. Before she could run farther, the Deputy grabbed her and attempted to apprehend her.

Rice then kicked the deputy’ full force’ in the shoulder before she was successfully placed in handcuffs. SCSO said Rice continued to scream and appeared to be under the influence. She was put in the back of a patrol car, where she began violently kicking the window in an apparent attempt to break it.

SCSO removed her from the vehicle, and she was advised of her rights. She told deputies she was trying to use the phone in Denny’s but became angry when they wouldn’t let her in. When asked why she assaulted the Deputy, she apologized and said, “I was trying to kick you in the face.”

As she was transported to jail, an alarm notified SCSO that Rice’s seatbelt had been undone. She was screaming, saying she would beat the Deputy up when her handcuffs were removed, calling him multiple and profane names. The Deputy stopped to re-secure Rice until she was booked into the Spokane County jail for third-degree assault, second-degree malicious mischief and a misdemeanor warrant.

The Deputy was not injured in this incident.
