Washington State’s Free Fishing Weekend makes a splash in June

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Anglers across Washington state can enjoy a license-free fishing weekend next month, courtesy of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). The annual Free Fishing Weekend event is scheduled for June 8-9.

During Free Fishing Weekend, anglers can fish for various species without needing a license. However, it’s important to note that fish requiring a catch record card (such as sturgeon, salmon, steelhead, and halibut) and all shellfish still necessitate a license. Nevertheless, all other open-for-harvest species can be pursued without a license.

Despite the license exemption, anglers must adhere to other WDFW regulations, including rules on seasons, size limits, daily limits, and area closures. It’s recommended that anglers review the current fishing regulations and any emergency rules before heading out. Information on fishing regulations is available on the WDFW website, the Fish Washington mobile app, and in printed booklets available at license vendors.

“Fish and Wildlife police remind you that failure to follow the regulations may result in a citation,” said Kirt Hughes, WDFW fish management division director. “Knowing the rules before heading out will make for a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.”

For more information, anglers can visit the WDFW website to locate a lowland lake nearby and view recent stocking information. Additionally, they can participate in the 2024 Trout Fishing Derby, with opportunities to redeem tags from caught trout for prizes.
