Washington Senators respond to State of the Union address

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray (D) have both offered reactions to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.

Cantwell used the president’s speech to tout Democratic legislative accomplishments.

“President Biden made clear tonight how to keep investing in America’s future — building on the success of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS & Science, and the Inflation Reduction Act,” Cantwell said.

Murray published a social media post during the address which emphasized Biden’s climate platform.

“[President Biden] understands the gravity of the situation we’re in—but also the opportunity. The climate crisis is real but we can tackle it while building a stronger clean energy economy. Joe Biden and Democrats have delivered historic action on climate and we’ll keep doing more,” Murray said.

Murray also used the event to highlight reproductive issues by inviting Kayla Smith, a woman who received what Murray characterized as a lifesaving abortion. In a social media post, the senator echoed Biden’s messaging on healthcare access.

“With a pro-choice majority in Congress and Joe Biden in the White House, we can—and WILL—restore Roe to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions,” Murray said.

Biden’s address sought to tout the president’s policy wins while setting the stage for his 2024 general election contest against former president Donald Trump.

As is the case every year, the event also created an opportunity for both major political parties to make their pitch to voters ahead of November.
