Washington sees first plow of the season at Sherman Pass!

FERRY COUNTY, Wash. – Eastern crews with Washington State Department of Transportation were up bright and early Friday morning for the first plow of the year!

After a layer of snow fell overnight on Sherman Pass, the plows rolled out to clear the roadway.

As we enter snow season, it’s important for drivers to remember the rules for plow safety:

Slow down.Give road crews plenty of room to work.Don’t pass a plow – operators have limited visibility of other vehicles and may be throwing snow from either direction.Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.Give yourself extra room to stop.

After five crashes involving drivers and plows by December last year, WSDOT implored drivers to be cautious.

“The plows are made of steel,” said WSDOT East Communications Manager Ryan Overton. “Those plow blades can take a hit from a vehicle like that, so it often times doesn’t result in a ton of damage to our plows. It’s the other third-party vehicle that really takes the brunt of the collision.”

While we haven’t had snow yet further south, fall is here and winter is coming. Make sure you’re prepared for icy roadways, snow, and hazardous conditions now so you’ll be ready and safe!
