Volunteers with Spokane C.O.P.S. keep homes safe

SPOKANE, Wash. – The number of homes getting robbed is on the rise in Spokane.

The latest crime stats show a recent 53% increase, jumping from 15 to 23 cases in a week.

Did you know there is a program that keeps an eye on your home while you’re out of town?

The program is run by the Spokane COPS program, which is a volunteer service helping police officers keep an eye on crime in the community.

Here’s how it works:

You sign up online for the free service, then, every day, a volunteer will drive past your home.

They’ll take notes on if something looks off, whether the home looks different from the day you left, and that includes unusual cars in your driveway.

However, one thing they will not do is check your doors.

Jeff Johnson the Executive Director of the Spokane COPS program says it’s in part for everyone’s safety.

If anything seems out of place, the volunteers will call the police and let them know.

If you are interested in helping during the holiday season or anytime afterwards, you must be 18 years or older, go through a background check and take part in an interview.

If you want to sign up, check out the Spokane COPS website here.

You can also call their main office at 509-625-3300 for more information.
