TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma fire crews responded to an active fire at Gault Middle School early Wednesday morning.

Just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 3, firefighters were called to a commercial structure fire at Gault Middle School in Tacoma.

The school has been vacant since 2009 due to the declining enrollment in the district. Since then, local fire departments have responded to multiple fires at that building.

When fire crews arrived on scene, the fire was reported to have spread throughout the building. A part of the roof had collapsed giving firefighters more access to put out the fire.

The battalion chief on scene said, “the fire appeared to be in the auditorium and a couple classrooms on the backside of the building… We allowed the roof to burn out so we could actually put water on the fire.”

According to the school district, the building was set to be demolished at some point this year.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. Check back for updates.
