Upstart Ministry holds Christmas feast for hundreds of homeless in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – In less than half a year, Mighty to Save Ministries went from an idea in Daniel Aga’s head, to a fully-fledged nonprofit hosting a Christmas feast for the homeless in downtown Spokane.

“There’s not one member of my team that hasn’t lived a lifestyle that we come down here and try to save other people from through Jesus,” Aga said.

Starting small, Might to Save has operated since the late summer, coming to the crime- and drug-infested area of Second Avenue and Division Street near a host of homeless shelters to provide food and offer services to those in need.

On Tuesday, the day after Christmas, they hosted an event so large even the organizers were shocked: nearly 200 homeless people enjoying prime rib and sweet treats while being offered warm clothes and sleeping bags.

“When you see us come out here and you see these individuals and they come up and give you the hand dap, they shake your hand, they call you brother, they call you friend,” Aga said, “that means something to us. That gives us strength, that fills our tank up.”

Currently working with a church in Coeur d’Alene, and working with other religious nonprofits like Maddie’s Place, Aga hopes to have his own place soon to be closer to the downtown Spokane area, where he knows people need the help the most.

The group plans to head to Arizona next week to help aid the homeless population in the Phoenix area.
