Tax season is here: IRS launches free federal tax filing program for 2024

SPOKANE, Wash. — The IRS is now accepting tax returns as Jan. 29 marks the first day of the 2024 filing season.

For many individuals filing taxes is a hassle, but the IRS Free File is available for eligible taxpayers for 2024.

This service can help individuals prepare and file their federal tax returns using free tax software from trusted IRS Free File partners.

Each IRS Free File provider sets its own eligibility rules based on age, income and state residency.

Taxpayers who are active-duty military, have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $79,000 or less in 2023 can likely find an offer from an IRS Free File provider that matches their needs. Some providers may also offer free state tax return preparation as well!

Here’s how to file, you can use a guided tax software. This will let you answer questions, choose your IRS partner, provide accurate math calculations, offer free state tax preparation and filing with some trusted partners and even file your federal return in Spanish.

If you make more than $79,000 a year, you can use the IRS’s free file fillable forms. These are electronic federal tax forms, equivalent to a paper 1040 form. You should know how to prepare your own tax return using form instructions and IRS publications if needed.
