SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Valley Police Department and SWAT arrested a domestic violence suspect in Spokane Valley after a two-hour standoff.

On March 1, at around 5:30 a.m., Spokane Valley deputies responded to a report of trouble happening around the 4600 block of North Larch Road.

Police report that during the call, a male and female were heard arguing at each other and that it seemed to be escalating to physical violence and threats to further harm or kill the victim were made.

Deputies then arrived and were able to get the adult female victim out of her home but the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Shawn D. Shuster, according to police “refused and remained belligerent.”

Police then formed a perimeter and advised Shuster to surrender peacefully.

Shuster appeared to be intoxicated or impaired, ignored police, continued to be uncooperative and threatened to shoot or assault the deputies.

Police then requested a search warrant and had evidence that he was carrying a gun, chemical weapons and stun grenades.

SWAT, K9-Units, UAS operators, and Crisis Negotiators responded to the scene to assist. Deputies also contacted neighbors in the immediate area to alert them of the situation, advising them to shelter in place or evacuate for their safety.

At approximately 7:40 am, Shuster appeared to be calming down after speaking with Deputies/Crisis Negotiators, eventually stating he would surrender after “he smoked a cigarette” and roughly 10 minutes later, he surrendered.

Shuster was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for harassment-threats to kill, a felony and fourth-degree assault charges(domestic violence) and intimidation/threatening a public servant.
