Studded tires must be removed by March 31 in Oregon and Washington

OLYMPIA, Wash.-Spring is finally here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it’s time to take those snow tires off your car.

In Washington and Oregon studded tires must be removed by the end of Sunday, March 31.

“We know that studded tires cause between $20 million to $29 million in damage to state-owned roads in Washington each winter and also damage city and county roads,” said WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin.

This year March 31 falls on Easter Sunday, which means some auto and tire shops may be closed, so the Department of Transportation is urging drivers to get their snow tires removed as quickly as possible to avoid a possible fine.

Tickets with fines of $137 could be issued by the Washington State Patrol starting April 1.
