Spokane’s South Perry District hit by more anti-LGBTQ+ vandalism

SPOKANE, Wash. – Vandalism has hit Spokane’s South Perry District again this weekend, marking over a month of ongoing anti- LGBTQ+ harassment to local businesses and homes.

Community members who spoke to NonStop Local said that late Friday night into Saturday morning on Oct. 14, pride flags were torn down, pumpkins were smashed, and businesses like Wishing Tree Books were egged.

The rainbow crosswalk on the corner of Perry Street and 12th Avenue was also hit, grey spray paint marring the colors meant to signify diversity and inclusion.

Things had been looking up for the Perry district as of late. The community gathered for a cleaning-off event last Wednesday to wash away previous vandalism and held a pop-up pride event Thursday evening.

While the community reflects on what to do next, Wishing Tree Books has received countless emails and messages, all in support of the diversity and inclusion of the area.
