SPOKANE, Wash. — The only restaurant in Spokane that serves Native American comfort food just received a national grant worth $25,000. Indigenous Eats was the only restaurant in all of Washington to receive it.
The grant was awarded to 40 restaurants nationwide from the Independent Restaurant Coalition and the Chase Innovator Awards.
Indigenous Eats was recognized for its consistent cultural preservation and sustainability.
“We are really trying to build some awareness about representation of this type of food and our cultures and bring it more mainstream,” said Jenny Slagle, founder of Indigenous Eats.
The grant money will be used to teach employees cultural cooking practices, including how to make traditional staples like their famous fry bread.
In the past, Indigenous Eats has received other national recognition and awards. In 2024, the restaurant was ranked fourth in USA Today’s Reader’s Choice for Best New Restaurant.
