Spokane Transit seeks community input on new rapid bus route

SPOKANE, Wash.- The Spokane Transit Authority (STA) is seeking public input on a new rapid transit line on Division Street.

Division, one of the most heavily trafficked roads in Spokane, can currently be traversed by bus via the 25 line. The Division Street BRT Project will replace the old STA service and offer a more efficient way of traveling from north Spokane to downtown.

This marks the second BRT project by STA. The first, City Line, opened to riders in the summer of 2023.

Funding for the project is split between a $1 million federal grant and $50 million in state funding from the state legislature’s 2022 transportation package. The route, which is projected to open to the public in 2030, will include improved waiting areas, around five miles of dedicated bus lane and zero-emission buses.

A survey which is currently open to Spokane residents includes a list of yes-or-no questions about each proposed bus stop, in the hopes of gauging which areas are most in need of a stop. Access to community resources such as schools and grocery stores are highlighted by the form as prioritized factors for creating STA stops.

Division may be traversable by bus today, but riders have an entirely new transportation experience in store next decade, one that could reshape one of Spokane’s most utilized roads.
