Spokane Public Schools notifies families of Canvas security breach

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools has notified families about a security breach involving Canvas, the learning management system used by the district.

The district said Canvas “recently experienced a nationwide security breach” but that officials are not aware of any sensitive data being compromised.

“SPS maintains strong security measures to protect the privacy and confidentiality of all student and staff information,” the district stated. “We regularly review and update our security protocols to ensure the highest level of data protection.”

The district acknowledged that security breach news can cause concern.

“We understand that news of this type can be concerning,” school officials wrote. “Please know that we take the security and privacy of our staff, students and families very seriously.”

Officials said they would provide updates as more information becomes available. The district directed questions to Let’s Talk, its communication platform.

The notification did not specify when the breach occurred or what information was potentially accessed. Canvas is operated by Utah-based Instructure.
