SPOKANE, Wash. — Six seniors from different Spokane Public School’s (SPS) will travel with district staff to Olympia to meet with the Washington Legislature to pitch ideas about changes they would like to see to schools.

On Jan. 29 students will travel to Olympia! This is the second year that SPS has traveled to meet with members of the Legislature.

Each student was chosen specifically by their principals based on interest and merit. These students will have the opportunity to see the Washington state legislature at work, and to talk about changes they want to see in schools.

After meeting with the Legislature, they will fly back home the same day.

Some of the topics they will discuss this year includes:

Adequate and equitable fundingMental health and school safety and securityCapital facilitiesEquity and inclusionSpecial education and support servicesTransportationEarly childhood education

Tommy Elliott, a senior at North-Central, who was offered a full-ride academic scholarship to University of Chicago is attending this event and says, “I think it’s a more personal message if it’s from kids who are actually experiencing life in school and the issues that are debated. These are issues that affect my friends so it’s more personal I should say.”

He is born and raised in Spokane and is excited for the opportunity to represent his student body and is ready to advocate for change.

SPS is hoping to continue these annual trips for years to come!
